Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
