The Background of Craps

[ English ]

The background of Craps dates all the way back to a dice game known as Hazard, which dates back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in Early 1800’s. Hazard is thought to be a byproduct of Azzahr, which means ‘the die’ a game played by Arabs.

The game evolved as it spread out from the Arab countries to Europe and then England. By the early eighteenth century, formal established rules for Hazard had been established. France adopted the British version of Hazard and is thought to have been brought to the us by early French settlers. In the mid-18th century, when the British beat the French in British North America, the French colonists relocated to Louisiana. Dice were played on river boats, casinos and wharfs and a streamlined ‘US’ version of Craps was created. The game moved west and is a popular game that is participated in all over the U.S. and all over the planet.

The name ‘Craps’ is theorized to be a French articulation of the phrase crabs, which alludes to a pair of ‘1s’. There are two basic forms of Craps that are gambled on-street Craps and bank Craps. Street caps, aptly called since it is played on the streets is where a shooter establishes a point and then tries to acquire that point. The betting is made either for or against the hurler and a player has to cover the wager in order for the game to carry on.

In casino Craps, which is the accepted game, gambled on in betting houses, the betting house funds the casino game. The players wager against the house-the casino covers all of the bets of all of the individuals. Craps once was a quite popular game but in the past 20 years had split itself and different games, such as poker and chemin de fer became more popular. However, Craps is observing a surge in recognition once again in internet betting houses and in real casinos.
