Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
