Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
