Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
