Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
