Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
