Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
