Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win.
