Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
