Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
