Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
