Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
