Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
