Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
