Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win.
