Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
