Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
