Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
