Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
