Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
