Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
