Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
