Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
