Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
