Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
